Health Officials Say 5 Cases Of Measles Confirmed In Texas

As soon as vaccination rates fall, old diseases re-emerge. As a highly contagious infection, measles can live in an airspace where an infected person was for up to two hours.

Part of what drives these outbreaks is the ease of the spread of measles. So far, there are 2 confirmed cases.

Sore throat followed by a rash breakout three to five days after symptoms begin. The rash starts on the forehead, spreads behind the ears and then down the trunk.

Complications can include otitis media, pneumonia, encephalitis, seizures and death. About 1 out of 4 people who get measles will be hospitalized.

The MMR vaccine is one of two immunizations recommended by the federal government to help prevent measles.

Infectious people were at Costco, the airport, a Blazers game and other sites. People are contagious for four days before and four days after rashes appear.
