"We're experiencing a system issue that is causing intermittent outages, and we're working to restore services as soon as possible", the bank's site said.

An hour later the company posted about the problem again, but offered no timetable on when it would be fixed.

Wells Fargo on Thursday blamed the technical issues on smoke, which was "detected following routine maintenance".

As of 9:15 a.m., the bank's website was also unavailable.

Starting around 6am Pacific Time (2pm UTC), the American bank's online portal and its mobile application have been totally unusable.

San Francisco-based Wells Fargo, the nation's third-largest bank, can't seem to catch a break when it comes to its customer service issues over the last few years. Some customers reported that cards were being declined as well.

Wells Fargo Outage: Website, App Down and Not Working, Gateway Error

Smoke at one of Wells Fargo's data centers left some of the bank's customers without access to online or mobile banking as well as other services Thursday.

Customers noted that they could not even speak with a banker over the phone for their banking needs because they were told bankers can't access the accounts, either.

Users took to Twitter to report the outage.

Many said they were stranded at gas stations and stores unable to complete their purchases.

Thursdays outage is the second to hit Wells Fargo in the last week.
