The agreement, which only Bulgaria voted against, sets the scene for negotiations within the European Union for extending the bloc's rules regulating gas deliveries to incoming pipelines, like the Russian-German Nord Stream 2.

The DPA Agency writes that the revised Gas Directive will not block the Nord stream - 2. The author has made every effort to ensure accuracy of information provided; however, neither Kitco Metals Inc. nor the author can guarantee such accuracy.

Yafimava told New Europe that the European Parliament has always been vocal on its opposition to Nord Stream-2 and it even passed a resolution in December 2018 for the project to be cancelled. The other two countries on the side of Germany are Bulgaria and Hungary.

"The dependence on Russian gas worries us".

The draft compromise sought to tackle concerns over Ukraine saying: "We consider a (gas rules) directive in this spirit indispensable for a fruitful discussion on the future gas transit through Ukraine".

Chancellor Angela Merkel said Nord Stream 2 would not make Germany dependent on Russian Federation for gas, stressing that Ukraine must remain a transit country. However, in November 2018, only 69 out of 751 Members of the European Parliament signed a letter against Nord Stream-2.

French President Emmanuel Macron's office said the compromise puts Nord Stream under "European oversight".

On Thursday, US Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell, along with Carla Sands and Gordon Sondland - US ambassadors to Denmark and the European Union - wrote in a Deutsche Welle guest commentarythat, "Nord Stream 2 will heighten Europe's susceptibility to Russia's energy blackmail tactics".

The proponents of policy change argue that the line is reinforcing the energy dependency of Europe from Russian Federation unnecessarily, and to the interests of the Eastern European EU member States and partner countries such as Ukraine claims.

Uniper, which has so far spent about €600 million out of the €950 million it earmarked for the project, said its assumption was that Nord Stream 2 would still be realised.

German businesses are very involved in the pipeline, having invested heavily in the project, which is run by former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder. EURACTIV Poland's media partner "Gazeta Wyborcza" reports. Merkel earlier on Thursday reiterated her support for the pipeline.

Kay-Olaf Lang from the German Institute for global and Security Affairs, Warsaw, told Germany's Deutsche Welle that the pipeline represented "German disloyalty towards its eastern neighbour, and of a special relationship with Russian Federation".

From across the Atlantic, Donald Trump's administration has been lobbying against the pipeline.

Leaders of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee said they would take up the resolution at their next business meeting.
