Later tonight, Brandi Carlile is set to perform at the 61st Grammy Awards show at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, where the hometown hero is up for three of the most prestigious awards.

The Grammys are a beast of an award show.

Alicia Keys is set to host the Grammys this year. "I feel like we are truly part of a celebration, bringing the light, bringing the energy and continuing to make the statement that music is such an important part of all of our lives", she said in a press preview on February 7, according to Rolling Stone. Diana Ross will be commemorated with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and will perform a medley on the occasion. Alicia Keys is hosting this year's event - and she's the first woman to do so in over a decade.

"I've kept my mouth shut but now you're lying about me", she tweeted. As far as performers go, fans of Ariana Grande might be disappointed to learn that she dropped out of the ceremony. "I'm especially excited for all the incredible women nominated this year!"

The 2019 Grammy Awards take place this Sunday, February 10th, and exclusive broadcasting rights for the music awards show in Canada goes to Rogers Media, which will be airing the Grammys on Citytv.

"It was when my creativity & self expression was stifled by you, that i decided not to attend. i hope the show is exactly what you want it to be and more", she continued.

Carlile told the AP she stands behind Grande's "decision to stand up for herself and her art".

He also blasted Kanye for not coming to his aide, when he is so quick to defend his buddy, United States President, Donald Trump. Kanye West started Donda's House after his mother, Donda West passed away in 2007.

"When they don't take home the big prize", he said, "the regard of the academy, and what the Grammys represent, continues to be less meaningful to the hip-hop community, which is sad".

Only two albums by hip-hop artists have ever won the album of the year Grammy - Lauryn Hill's "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" in 1999, and Outkast's "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below" in 2004.

In the Best New Artist category, six of the eight nominees are women.

Women artists scored nominations in all of the top categories, after being largely muted a year ago: rapper Cardi B, pop diva Lady Gaga, pop futurist Janelle Monae and folk rocker Brandi Carlile are among the frontrunners.

The red-carpet, followed by the full event, can be watched live on Grammy's official website as well as on the CBS website.

When asked about the lack of women in the top categories at the 2018 Grammys, Recording Academy CEO Neil Portnow said women need to "step up". A study released by the University of Southern California's Annenberg Inclusion Initiative days before the ceremony found that of the 899 individuals who had been nominated for the previous six shows, 90.7 percent were men.
