#5 Kentucky Fends Off Pesky Bulldogs For Road Victory

Five years ago, who would have thought that? But the last time Tennessee visited Mississippi State has since haunted Bulldogs coach Vic Schaefer. Before we get to that, though, here are three takeaways from the Tennessee Lady Vols' blowout loss.

Now, the model has studied the Kentucky vs. Mississippi State spread from every angle and crunched the numbers.

"I'm extremely impressed with how hard they play, how physical they are and how they attack the boards", Schaefer said of Tennessee.

Sunday at pregame breakfast, Schaefer reminded his Bulldogs of how good they could be if everyone was focused and on fire.

Mississippi State took advantage of Westbrook's absence.

Tennessee suffered its first-ever loss to the Bulldogs on January 28, 2016, when #13/13 MSU came from 12-down in the fourth quarter to force OT and defeat the #19/23 Lady Vols in Starkville, 65-63.

"I think he's the best player in the country, but not like he played today", Calipari said. "My message to my kids is you better be ready and have it in fifth gear from the jump because they will flat smack you in the mouth and make you like it".

"We've got some really talented kids", Schaefer said. What? If you're the best, play that way. But you would have never had that chance, because I would have never said something so far-fetched, so outlandish.

Sophomore Evina Westbrook led UT (15-7, 4-5 SEC) in scoring with 18 points, followed closely by sophomore Rennia Davis and senior Meme Jackson, who had 17 apiece. The 28-point victory was the Lady Vols largest defeat ever in conference play and was tied for their second-largest margin of defeat overall. Mississippi State rallied to close the quarter with a 61-49 advantage.

Air time for games on the Lady Vol Radio Network generally occurs 30 minutes prior to tip-off. They didn't do that until 2016, ending an 0-36 streak of misery in a series that for almost 30 years was as sure a thing as there was in the SEC. Holly Warlick's team was dominated by the No. 6 ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs on the road 91-63.

She was said to have been driving a white SUV but details of her physical description are "unknown". The baby was wearing one-piece flannel pajamas and was cold but otherwise healthy, deputies said.

Including this game, MSU has been the higher ranked team in the past six games, entering this one with a 4-1 edge over UT.

Much has changed in the SEC women's basketball power structure in recent years, and Mississippi State has been a big part of that.

The game got off to a fast start offensively with both teams scoring on their first two possessions.

Tearia McCowan (24 points, 15 rebounds) and Anriel Howard (16 points, 11 rebounds) each had double-doubles for the Bulldogs.

But the Bulldogs' guard play also was exceptional Sunday. This year, Danberry is averaging 13.3 points and 26.5 minutes.

Lamar Peters led the Bulldogs with 16 points.

Teaira McCowan (15), all 6 feet, 7 inches of her, was diving all over The Hump after loose balls Sunday.

Kushkituah shed a bulky knee brace during the LSU game and finished the day with 14 points and eight rebounds.

No. 3 OR is the only team to beat Mississippi State this season; the Ducks pounded No. 11 Stanford 88-48 on Sunday. That matchup with the Gamecocks, on March 3 in Columbia, South Carolina, might decide the regular-season title.

"I'm very proud of my team", Schaefer said. As a result, their entire offense was about trying to push the ball in transition and hoping they could hit some outside shots.
