Commenting in a similar tone at the time, Rometty said the acquisition was a "game-changer", and that IBM would become "the world's number one hybrid cloud provider" as a result offering companies "the only open cloud solution".

IBM continued to make inroads into the big bank sector, announcing this morning at its annual Think conference in San Francisco that Banco Santander, the fifth largest bank in Europe with approximately US$1.4 trillion in total assets (as of 2017), has signed a $700 million, five-year global technology digital transformation agreement focused around implementing the bank's hybrid cloud strategy. "So we introduced IBM Watson and it became a very powerful tool to help our employees and helped us to lower our employee turnover rate to less than 10%", said Ted Chung, CEO of Hyundai Card ∙ Hyundai Capital ∙Hyundai Commercial. They will now be able to deploy AI wherever their data resides.

"Businesses have largely been limited to experimenting with AI in siloes due to the limitations caused by Cloud provider lock-in of their data", Rob Thomas, General Manager, IBM Data and AI, said in a statement.

IBM said that companies will use Watson AI tools such as Watson Assistant, which can help them develop conversational services such as a virtual customer service agent, in mobile apps hosted on Amazon, Microsoft and IBM servers. "By breaking open that siloed infrastructure we can help businesses accelerate their transformation through AI".

The network for commercial financing will offer participants with a single view of all the transactions which are happening within the network while automating manual processes and enabling transactions data to be securely managed as well as shared more efficiently.

Oil rises after Saudi output pledge, declining USA inventories
Crude inventories built for a fourth week in a row, rising 3.6 million barrels to 450.8 million barrels in the week to February 8. The IEA further added that traders shouldn't expect USA sanctions against Venezuela to fuel a rally in oil prices.

Watson comes with applications, development tools, machine learning tools and management services to mine data while automating "time- and resource- sensitive processes", according to the announcement. This means businesses can now leave data in secure or preferred environments and take Watson to that data.

According to an MIT Sloan report, 81 per cent of enterprises do not understand what data is required for AI, or how to access it.

ICP for Data is IBM's open, cloud-native information architecture for AI that comes integrated with advanced data science, data engineering and application-building capabilities, and is created to help companies uncover previously unobtainable insights from their data.

But now Watson has broken IBM out of the private cloud space and into its cloud competitors' territory. In addition, the Watson Assistant Discovery Extension enables organisations to unlock hidden insights in unstructured data and documents. Later this year, IBM will bring additional Watson services to ICP for Data, including Watson Knowledge Studio and Watson Natural Language Understanding.
