Inter have left Mauro Icardi out of their squad for Thursday's Europa League clash with Rapid Vienna after stripping him of the captaincy earlier on Wednesday.

Inter Milan announced on Wednesday afternoon that goalkeeper Samir Handanovic was their new captain.

"The decision to remove the captain's armband from Icardi was hard and painful, because we all know what he is worth to the team", Spalletti told reporters at his pre-match press conference.

"Icardi was called up, and has decided not to travel to Vienna", the coach explained to Sky Sport.

Icardi, who has in the past been linked with Real Madrid and Manchester United, had been involved in discussions over extending his contract with the Nerazzurri beyond 2021.

China's Foreign Ministry referred questions on talks to the Ministry of Commerce, which did not respond to a request for comment. These include ending China's alleged violations of intellectual-property rights and forced transfers of American technologies.

"It was a hard decision but it was supported by everyone at the club and made for the good of Inter as well as the team".

"The things going on around Icardi have disturbed us, both him and the team which he used to captain". He has not scored in the league since mid-December - a run of eight games without finding the back of the net.

The Slovenia global, 34, joined Inter from Udinese in 2012 while Icardi arrived from Sampdoria in 2013, taking over as captain from Andrea Ranocchia in 2015.

Luciano Spalletti's side returned to winning ways last weekend against Parma having taken just one point from their three previous Serie A games.

"There will be time to clear things up in the coming days, but as far as I am concerned, this is all I have to say on Mauro". Reports have suggested that the 25-year-old has been discussing a new contract with the club for months, yet no renewal has materialised as of yet. Chelsea will never get a better chance to sign him.
