Russian, Chinese lasers threaten US satellites: Pentagon

If the US really cares about the security of space, it should join China in arms control, Hua said.

"The People's Liberation Army also sees counterspace operations as a means to deter and counter a possible U.S. intervention during a regional military conflict", the report said, adding that destroying satellites would make it hard for the United States to target precision guided weapons.

"Some actors are seeking ways to deny the effectiveness of the United States, having witnessed more than 25 years of U.S. military successes enabled by space capabilities", the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) study said. "Both China and Russian Federation reorganized their militaries in 2015, emphasizing the importance of space operations", the official said.

Eight days later, the USA shot down a failed spy satellite with a ballistic missile, something China had done the year before.

Americans need to be aware of the real threats that China and Russian Federation pose to USA capabilities in space.

China's Foreign Ministry, however, said the US allegations were "groundless".

"Chinese and Russian doctrine indicate that they view space as important to modern warfare and view counterspace capabilities as a means to reduce USA and allied effectiveness", the senior official said. "So this may lead to the reality of the weaponization and endangerment of outer space". The proposal-entitled the Treaty on the Prevention of the Placement of Weapons in Outer Space, the Threat or Use of Force against Outer Space Objects-was immediately shot down by the USA, which labeled it "a diplomatic ploy by the two nations to gain a military advantage", according to Nuclear Threat Initiative. These agreements prohibit the placement of weapons of mass destruction (but not other weapons) in space.

One threat is a result of the successes in space.

Oddsmakers Now Favor Giants To Sign Bryce Harper
The Padres have been aggressive with both Harper and Machado late in free agency and have been pushing to land one of them. The Philadelphia Phillies and the San Francisco Giants are the two teams Nightengale believes are still in it for Harper.

The report notes the space threat posed by North Korea and Iran, who have demonstrated satellite jamming as well, and touches on the growing problem of space junk. "That makes tracking satellites and discriminating satellites from threats and nonthreats and predicting and preventing collisions more challenging".

The warning, in a new report Monday from the Defense Intelligence Agency, builds on a series of warnings issued by the defense and intelligence communities over the past several years.

Of about 21,000 large objects in space measuring at least four inches, about 1,800 are active satellites, according to the defense agency.

The rest is debris, including parts of spacecraft, according to the agency. The application on a hand-held device that gives directions, calls rideshare auto or locates a lost package is enabled by the Global Positioning System constellation operated by the U.S. Air Force.

Anti-satellite weapons The report details a variety of Russian and Chinese anti-satellite weapons, including electronic warfare systems, directed-energy weapons and "kinetic" anti-satellite missiles.

Space is the common property of all mankind, not the private property of the Americans, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a briefing.

"Space is fundamental to US prosperity", the Pentagon official said.
