One source told the paper: '[The drone pilot] knew the blind spots for it, where it could not be "hit".

'Hypothetically it could have been a disgruntled employee'.

The West Sussex airport was on lockdown for 36 hours in December, disrupting more than 140,000 passengers.

Another added: "The thinking is that it is someone who had good knowledge of the airport layout".

A second source said the "disgruntled employee theory is running high".

On Thursday morning, Dublin Airport announced that all flights would be suspended for safety reasons due to the confirmed sighting of a drone over the airfield.

Officers have collected 130 witness statements and made 1,100 door-to-door inquiries, pulling in other police forces to help, the newspaper said.

Three flights were diverted due the disruption, and the airport said that there will also be some knock-on delays to flights on Thursday. It is illegal to fly drones within five kilometres of an airport in the State and all drones that weigh more than 1kg must be registered with the IAA.

Estimates suggest that businesses - including airlines, retailers, hotels and taxis - could easily have lost tens of millions in combined revenues as a result of the fracas at Gatwick, with the airport alone thought to have lost hundreds of thousands of pounds in revenue.
