His family made the announcement Thursday through the Hall of Fame and said Seaver has retired from public life.

This is a sad day for New York Mets fans and our thoughts are with Seaver and his family. He will continue to work at Seaver Vineyards, founded by the retired player and wife Nancy in 2002 on 116 acres at Diamond Mountain in the Calistoga region of California.

Seaver won 198 games and three National League Cy Young Awards in 12 years with the Mets over two stints.

Seaver pitched from 1967 to 1986 for four teams, but is noted primarily for his time with the Mets, especially for his role in the team's 1969 World Series win.

"The family is deeply appreciative of those who have supported Tom throughout his career, on and off the field, and who do so now by honoring his request for privacy", the statement reads. "We join Tom in sending warmest regards to everyone", the statement concluded. He finished his career with 3,640 strikeouts and 61 shutouts. But general manager Frank Cashen blundered by leaving Seaver off his list of 26 protected players, and in January 1984 the White Sox claimed Seaver as free-agent compensation for losing pitcher Dennis Lamp to the Blue Jays.

He helped the Mets win their first World Series in 1969 and helped the Amazins get back to the World Series in 1973, only to lose to the Oakland A's.

A person familiar with the Mets' thinking told The Post on Friday that the Mets have been in the process of coming up with a number of ways to properly honor Seaver, the greatest Met in franchise history.

During his legendary career, which spanned more than two decades, Seaver was a 12-time All-Star, a three-time Cy Young victor, a five-time N.L. strikeout king, and a three-time ERA and wins leader.

Seaver received 98.84 percent of all votes in 1992 when he was elected to the Hall of Fame, which was the highest percentage of votes received at the time. His mark was surpassed in 2016 by Ken Griffey Jr. and this year by Mariano Rivera, the first unanimous selection.
