Plane crash in central Colombia kills 12

All the 12 people aboard were killed in a plane crash in Colombia on Saturday, said the country's Special Administrative Unit of Civil Aeronautics. Doris Villegas, the mayor of the small town Taraira, and her husband and daughter were among the victims.

The company did not immediately respond to the crash, according to Reuters.

An emergency call was placed at 10:40 a.m. while the Laser Aero flight was traveling between between San Jose del Guaviare and Villavicencio, according to the agency in a CNN report.

"We are in the process of identifying the victims of this event and I want to express my solidarity with the families", Duque said in a press statement.

The Defensa Civil emergency services put the death toll at 12, with director Colonel Jorge Martinez suggesting an engine failure could have caused the crash.
