The tweet by Giddens was accompanied by a video of O'Rourke speaking from his home city of El Paso, Texas, wearing a University of Northern Iowa baseball cap and urging UNI students to vote for Giddens. "[University of Northern Iowa], we're counting on you, and we're looking forward to seeing you soon".

Chris Evans, a spokesman for O'Rourke, confirmed in an email to Reuters that O'Rourke will be in Waterloo, Iowa, campaigning for Giddens on Saturday afternoon. O'Rourke's team recently teased his upcoming "big announcement" in emails to supporters, and he has been building out a national campaign staff, CNN previously reported.

"People in communities across the country have been reaching out and asking me if I'm planning on running in 2020", read one ad that was still active as of Tuesday afternoon. It ended in a narrow loss to the Republican incumbent, Ted Cruz. While he ruled out running again for the U.S. Senate seat in Texas, he stopped short of revealing if his decision included launching a challenge to President Donald Trump in 2020.

The moves suggest O'Rourke is ramping up for a presidential bid, including his first trip to Iowa as a candidate or prospective candidate.

The HSDA website says questions for O'Rourke must be "brief and unrelated to Beto as a potential 2020 candidate". A Friday visit to Des Moines was considered initially, but isn't now in the works, as O'Rourke plans to devote all three days to introducing himself to voters in eastern Iowa.

"Beto O'Rourke has long sold Democrats a bill of goods, pretending to be a liberal superstar while exploiting his father-in-law's connections to climb the political ladder".

O'Rourke hasn't said yet whether he's in or out of the 2020 White House race. Speculation grew that he would run for president after he was narrowly defeated by Sen.

O'Rourke is in his hometown of El Paso, Texas, this week ahead of his Iowa trip. The former Texas congressman is expected to visit the Hawkeye State on Saturday to participate in a get-out-the-vote event.
