Boeing shares dropped as much as 2.5% to $365.88 following Trump's announcement.

A reduction in the number of planes in an airline's inventory is also likely to drive up the cost of plane tickets.

"This safety notice restricts commercial passenger flights from any air operator, both domestic and foreign, of the Boeing 737 Max 8 and 9 aircraft - from arriving, departing, or overflying Canadian airspace". People continue to travel, and airlines either find a way to make the new reality work, or regulators loosen restrictions, as they did with the laptop ban.

The decision to ground the planes is a precautionary move that was made after a review of all the available evidence, Garneau told a news conference Wednesday in Ottawa that was twice delayed by what he called new incoming information.

Airlines have been notified that the Boeing Max aircraft are being taken out of circulation temporarily, and they are in agreement with the decision, Trump claimed.

President Donald Trump spoke to Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg on Tuesday, CNN reported.

Canada grounded the planes earlier on Wednesday while the European Union acted on Tuesday.

House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Peter DeFazio, a Democrat, said "it has become abundantly clear to us that not only should the 737 MAX be grounded but also that there must be a rigorous investigation into why the aircraft, which has critical safety systems that did not exist on prior models, was certified without requiring additional pilot training".

Over the weekend, an Ethiopian Airlines crash killed 157 people, while a Lion Air accident in October left 189 dead.

Passengers were fretting too, with many seeking reassurances they would not be flying on a 737 Max.

An airline might fly its aircraft more hours each day, perhaps starting each day at 5 a.m. instead of 6, and flying until midnight instead of 11 a.m.

The crashes prompted numerous airlines and countries to announce this week they were grounding the gets pending investigation into the cause.

Tampa International Airport says three flights were canceled Wednesday after the US government's decision to halt operation of all of Boeing's 737 MAX 8 and MAX 9 planes.

"Trump said any plane now in the air will go to its destination and then be grounded, adding that pilots and airlines have been notified".

"It's a awful, bad thing. They are working very, very hard right now, and hopefully they will very quickly come up with the answer but until they do the planes are grounded and you will be hearing from the FAA directly in a little while".

The 737 Max airlines are a small percentage of the fleets for both American and Southwest Airlines, having been introduced into service just two years ago. Its total fleet is around 60 aircraft, including other models of the 737.

The grounding was welcomed by air workers in the United States.

"The Southwest Team is working diligently to minimize disruptions to our customers' travel plans", said Gary Kelly, Southwest's chief executive. The carrier had been using five of the planes and awaiting delivery of 25 more.

The last fleet-wide grounding by the FAA occurred on January 17, 2013, when it ordered a halt to revenue flights by Boeing's then-new model, the mostly composite 787, after a lithium-ion batteries on the plane overheated.

In 1979, the FAA grounded the McDonnell Douglas DC-10.
