Colorado student activists prepare to strike for climate change action

The protests were inspired by Swedish teen activist Greta Thunberg, who camped out in front of parliament in Stockholm previous year to demand action from world leaders on global warming.

"I think environmental education should be mandatory from elementary school", said 15-year-old high school student Bang Tae-ryung. Her efforts eventually got the attention of world leaders when she delivered a blistering speech at the UN's climate conference in December.

Every Friday, Mia and Katie Beijer hitch a ride with their mother from their home in Cantley, Qc.to Parliament Hill to continue their fight for climate action.

Following devastating hurricanes in the United States, record droughts in Cape Town and forest fires in the Arctic, the IPCC makes clear that climate change is already happening, upgraded its risk warning from previous reports, and warned that every fraction of additional warming would worsen the impact.

But the budding activists have received encouragement from New Zealand Prime Minster Jacinda Ardern, who said it was important for the young generation to send a message. Some students in Colorado are preparing to miss class Friday as part of the U.S. Youth Climate Strike.

This is the second global youth strike, with the first one taking place on February 15, 2019.

The day of action is expected to embrace about 100 countries.

"Many people [are losing] their homes and livelihoods".

"It's outrageous. But we're not going to sit and watch our futures being trashed due to their addiction to the fossil fuel industry", says Thorpe.

He said members of the student group have discussed the walkout with school officials.

"If they're not panicking about the climate crisis, then they must not understand it", says Hutten.
