The storm also caused flash flooding across the Plains and Midwest states, the NWS reported.

The storm threat had already forced the cancellation of more than half the almost 1,050 flights into or out of Denver International Airport by early Wednesday, according to the tracking site FlightAware. Per NBC News, as many as 74 million people across America should be expecting severe conditions such as blizzards, heavy rains and flooding. "The positive spin on this, if you want to put it that way, is there was so much energy focused with this storm, if you look at the usual tornado outbreaks that occur with these big storms that go up into the plains - very minimal overall".

Bria McKenzie, 22, said she and her mother, brother and sister were stuck in their vehicle for more than two hours on a hilly road in Colorado Springs.

"Bombogenesis" was coined as a combination of cyclogenesis, or the formation of a cyclone or storm, and bomb as its effects can lash out in affected areas like an explosion. As a result, 1339 flights have been canceled.

Blizzards in Colorado and Wyoming and winds of up to 97 miles per hour on Wednesday shut down highways, interstates and airports, and knocked out power to about 184,000 homes and businesses in the Denver area, according to a report from the Associated Press (AP).

But in eastern Nebraska, flooding worsened Friday and remained a big concern in the lower Missouri River region - which is a major source for the Mississippi River - with the weather service issuing warnings of high water along the river and its tributaries from southeastern South Dakota to St. Louis in Missouri. She said the snow was so blinding and numbing, and the wind was whipping so hard, she didn't feel safe walking to a hospital that was just down the road. Residents of Avoca, Iowa, were filling sandbags to keep floodwaters from spreading, and the American Red Cross set up a shelter for anyone who was displaced.

"With the frozen ground and amount of rain our area had, it was just a ideal set of circumstances that led to the flooding we're seeing in Nebraska and Iowa", meteorologist Paul Fajman told the AP. He police said people should be careful during the exit.

‘Apprentice’ contestant’s Trump defamation suit can proceed

Five people were hurt and 150 dairy cows had to be euthanized when a tornado hit the small town of Dexter, New Mexico, on Tuesday.

Air rushed into the low-pressure area and then rose into the atmosphere.

The wind also contributed to a 26 auto train derailment in New Mexico, CNN reported.

"Things are moving and changing at a rapid pace", Douglas County Commissioner Mary Ann Borgeson said Friday at a news conference.

"It's like a vacuum cleaner, really", Carbin said.

CNN Meteorologist Brandon Miller reported that the current storm pressure has "dropped 24 millibars in the last 18 hours" so the phenomenon definitely ticks all the criteria of a bomb cyclone.

The current bomb cyclone also whacked part of Texas - including in Amarillo, where high winds shoved a semitruck off a highway Wednesday.
