Rashford gave United hope after pulling a goal back deep in stoppage time, but it was too little too late as Wolves advanced to the final four.

It means after a run of nine away wins in a row, Solskjaer has seen his side lose back-to-back games against Arsenal and Wolves.

"It's a big step backwards, I've got to say".

"It was the poorest performance we've had", said Solskjaer.

"Last week we were happy with the performance but today we never had the urgency or the quality on the ball".

"It's not easy - I don't know if it's easy either - when you're in the media or when you're a supporter, you can think short-term".

"We got what we deserved". For sure they will try to win everything but we are ready to compete with them.

But you can't sit down and sulk for too long. It's very disappointing that we're not in the semis. We've got to think about the longevity as well, who's going to fit in personality-wise.

"This was the poorest we've played", Solskjaer told BBC Sport.

Goals from Granit Xhaka and Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang condemned Manchester United to their first league defeat since Solskjaer's appointment as caretaker boss back in December, however, the Norwegian said that despite the result, he was pleased with the performance from his side.

"We can not wait for the challenge for third and, of course, big nights like when Barcelona come".

With their fans singing "We're on our way back", Wolves savoured another huge Cup victory after knocking out Liverpool in the third round and will now have a Wembley semifinal to add to their many highlights in a hugely impressive first season back in the Premier League. We created a lot of chances, we played some good football.
