That's higher than California's statewide average of $3.80 for a gallon of regular unleaded, which also happens to be the most expensive of any state at the moment.

In a study the app released exclusively to USA Today, GasBuddy found both the best and worst days to fill up nationwide in each state, with Monday being the clear, overall victor for penny pinchers.

The average price of gas in California as of Monday is $3.76 a gallon - 25.4 cents higher than the same time a year ago, according to GasBuddy. That's up 14 cents from a week ago and 38 cents from a month ago.

One driver said he spent $80 to fill up his truck.

The current issues contributing to the price spike are refinery outages in California, as well as refineries going through maintenance in Washington state.
