Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno said in a video that his government made a "sovereign decision" to revoke Assange's asylum due to "repeated violations to global conventions and daily-life protocols".

The announcement came hours after British police arrested Assange on Thursday, the latest step in a legal drama dating back more than seven years.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange faces up to a year in prison after a London court on Thursday convicted him of skipping bail and failing to surrender to authorities by hiding in the Ecuadorian Embassy in 2012 to avoid extradition on a sexual assault accusation.

The police said they were "invited into the embassy by the Ambassador, following the Ecuadorian government's withdrawal of asylum".

Moreno said his country "had reached its limit" with Assange in a statement reported by the BBC that cited WikiLeaks' January 2019 release of secret Vatican documents.

Hillary Clinton said Thursday that Julian Assange - whose organization, WikiLeaks, played a damaging role in her 2016 electoral defeat - needs to "answer for what he has done". He was arrested on charges that he skipped bail in the United Kingdom in 2012 and at the request of U.S. authorities, London's Metropolitan Police said.
