Did a tornado hit the Southern Tier? Weather service investigating

As storms swept through Northeast Ohio, one city seemed to get the worst of it.

The Times Gazette reported several homes and businesses were damaged after an apparent tornado struck Shelby, Ohio, Sunday about 4 p.m. local time.

Two children were killed on a back road in East Texas when a pine tree fell onto a vehicle they were riding in a severe thunderstorm Saturday near Pollok, about 150 miles (241 kilometers) southeast of Dallas.

If a tornado warning is issued in your area, the National Weather Service says to immediately take shelter in a basement or lower-level room away from windows. No fatalities were reported. No injuries were reported there, but officials said several businesses and vehicles were damaged.

In addition, three people were killed when a private jet crashed in MS on Saturday, although Bryant said it was unclear whether it was caused by the weather.

Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell said there are reports of trees down in the south part of Monroe County.

The large storm system also caused flash floods in Louisiana, where two deaths were reported.

The agency says a survey team found evidence of an EF-3 twister with winds of at least 136 miles per hour near Weches, Texas, and two other smaller tornadoes touched down in the same region Saturday.

The massive storm system that killed several people from Texas to MS is now barreling east, threatening to spawn tornadoes and other catastrophic weather from New England to the Gulf Coast. More than 140,000 customers lost power in Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas as of late Saturday. None of the injuries were thought to be life-threatening.

Hamilton, Mississippi, is 140 miles (225 kilometers) southwest of Memphis, Tennessee. Earlier, two children died in East Texas after a tree fell on their moving auto.

As a result of the storm organizers for the Masters golf tournament at Georgia's Augusta National Golf Club moved up tee times Sunday.

The threat of severe weather will likely increase throughout the day, the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center said. The parents in the front seats were not hurt.
