Trump says he will award Tiger Woods the Presidential Medal of Freedom

Tiger received an outpouring of support immediately after capturing the green jacket, which included congratulatory messages from Serena Williams and Kobe Bryant, as well as a sneaker tribute from Chris Paul.

"Spoke to Tiger Woods to congratulate him on the great victory he had", Trump tweeted, and "to inform him that because of his incredible Success & Comeback in Sports (Golf) and, more importantly, LIFE, I will be presenting him with the PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM!"

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the nation's highest civilian honor.

Woods will be the fourth athlete the president has chosen.

There were questions about his ability to win a major tournament, but those have all ended following the Masters victory. Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus also have Medals of Freedom, both bestowed by President George W. Bush.

Woods' victory was his first major title since winning the 2008 U.S. Open, and it came 22 years after his first career win at the Masters in 1997. In 2018, he gave medals to football players Roger Staubach and Alan Page and a posthumous award to baseball player Babe Ruth.

Charles Sifford, who was the first African American to play on the PGA Tour, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014 by Barack Obama.

Mr. Trump owns a dozen golf courses in the US and frequently spends his weekends at his clubs in Florida, Virginia or New Jersey.
