They thereby imposed a deadweight cost on business and an inconvenience to commuters.

CNN noted, "Extinction Rebellion, which launched late a year ago with climate protests that shut down five London bridges, made headlines earlier this month when members of the group disrupted a Brexit debate in Parliament with a nude demonstration".

The demonstration, which XR describes as non-violent civil disobedience, comes on the back of similar action in November that saw thousands of protesters occupy five bridges in central London. Some activists also glued themselves to windows.

"Intentional arrests for criminal damage allow Extinction Rebellion to take this core strategy into the courts", the group said in a statement.

Last November, Extinction Rebellion forced Westminster, Lambeth, Waterloo, Blackfriars and Southwark Bridges in London to close, issuing a statement that read, "Extinction Rebellion demands that the United Kingdom government immediately tells the truth and declares a climate and ecological emergency, that it reverses inconsistent policies and reduces to net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2025, and creates a citizen's assembly to oversee these changes".

The next step for the researchers is to culture the printed hearts in a laboratory and "teach them" to behave like hearts. Heart transplantation is now the only treatment available to patients with end-stage heart failure.

"We need to disrupt the system that through no fault of its own, is geared to destroy our planet", the group said. In the letter, they warn they would escalate their disruptive actions over the coming days and weeks unless the government acts.

Extinction Rebellion said: "The global rebellion begins and Extinction Rebellion will be bringing London to a standstill for up to two weeks".

"We would encourage people to check their journeys before they travel". "If we don't do anything to change this, our children will die".

Extinction Rebellion said it aimed to cause more than £6,000 of damage so they could be tried by a jury in Crown Court.

But police said no arrests were made overnight after earlier explaining their operational response to camping "would be dependent on what if any other issues might be ongoing at the time".
