Expanding to earbuds could present an even bigger challenge if Microsoft wants to take on Apple's trendsetting AirPods. The Surface earbuds are said to be in the works with codename Morrison, which might point to Jim Morrison, who was the lead vocalist of the rock band The Doors. If you skipped the Surface Headphones, would you be more interested in wireless Surface Buds from Microsoft? Now, it looks like Microsoft is planning to launch a pair of wireless earbuds, too, but under the Surface brand.

The device is being developed as part of a secret project, codenamed 'Morrison, ' and could be coming as soon as later this year.

Although the Surface headphones, came to the market with clever controls and good connectivity, they failed to make an impact with sound quality or price.

Microsoft's foray into headphones may not be a one-off, according to a new report.

What new heights will the boys reach? "You know, I just had to look at myself and say, 'Hey". Both videos already have well over 1 million views.

It's not year clear how Microsoft intends to differentiate its earbuds from others that are now available from competitors. The same applies to Amazon, which is also reportedly working on its own AirPods competitor as a way to get Alexa into more people's pockets.

Microsoft has not confirmed the report and as such, there is no timetable for the earbuds release. "Thurrott does say that the buds could contain a feature that "[improves] interactions between a phone and the earbuds" to make reading websites, e-books, and other digital content easier on smartphones, but that functionality may not make it into the final product.

Tech giant Microsoft is reportedly developing the Apple AirPods rival, allegedly called the Surface Buds. We may see a prototype - if one exists - by the end of the year.
