Sony PlayStation 5 Will Feature 8k Graphics, Ray Tracing, and PS4 Compatibility

The PS5 CPU will be powered by an upcoming third-generation 7nm Ryzen chip based on Zen 2 8-core Ryzen Processor working alongside a Navi-based custom GPU. "Because it's based in part on the PS4's architecture, it will also be backward-compatible with games for that console".

One of the coolest features Cerny reportedly showed off in the Spider-Man demo was the solid state drive's (literally) game-changing ability to let players play games faster, without losing an ounce of graphical fidelity.

Cost and storage capacity have always been major bottlenecks for pushing solid state drives into the gaming console market, and Cerny did not reveal plans for the new device's storage capacity or pricing.

Sony has revealed the first tidbits of information for its next-generation console-most likely named PlayStation 5, but that hasn't been confirmed.

"I won't go into the details of our VR strategy. beyond saying that VR is very important to us and that the current PSVR headset is compatible with the new console", he confirmed.

The new system also seems to be built around having a large, custom SSD that'll drop load times significantly.

Wisconsin man’s wager on Tiger earns him more than $1.2M

If you're wondering, yes, Mark Cerny is in a place to know about these things - on top of being hardware honcho for both PS4 and PS5, he's been a major mover and shaker at PlayStation from nearly the beginning.

The other hardware upgrades are also impressive, but at a certain point the descriptions of them sound like so much marketing patter - meaning it's hard for gamers to tell how the hardware described will actually benefit them.

Technically supports 8K but Cerny demoed Spider-Man load speed improvements on a 4K screen (I would only take this as confirmation of HDMI 2.1). It's possible Sony itself has not yet made a final decision; the platform holder could always sell the box at a loss if it believes it to be necessary, which would mean a cheaper price. Look at how much goodwill Microsoft accrued just by adding compatibility for Xbox 360 and original Xbox games to the One.

This statement was further verified by various US, European, and Japanese developers, with some discontented with the shift.

While more and more rumors and reports regarding Sony's next-gen console, which we assume will be called the PS5, has been making the rounds, we now have our first official PS5 info and it comes from Sony nonetheless! Are you excited by what we've learned?
