Koch knew before launching last month that her flight might stretch into 2020 and sought advice from Kelly as well as retired astronaut Peggy Whitson, the current record-holder for female space fliers.

NASA and its International Space Station partners have made new crew assignments and set a new schedule for station expeditions that includes an expected record-setting flight for our Christina Koch.

"Astronauts demonstrate fantastic resilience and adaptability in response to long duration spaceflight exposure", NASA's Jennifer Fogarty said in a statement.

Two other NASA astronauts - Jessica Meir and Andrew Morgan - have also been assigned to future space station crews.

Christina Koch's expedition is planned to be just a little bit shorter than the longest single spaceflight (340 days) performed by former NASA astronaut Scott Kelly during his mission in 2015-2016.

Queen Elizabeth Celebrates Her 93rd Birthday With Royal Family at Easter Service
In 2015, she surpassed the six-decade reign of Queen Victoria, her great-great grandmother who ruled from 1837 to 1901. The Queen traditionally spends a month-long residence at Windsor Castle, known as Easter Court, each year.

Another NASA astronaut also will have an extended stay. Unfortunately, due to some last-minute preference changes with McClaine's space suit sizing the spacewalk was instead conducted by NASA's Nick Hague and Koch, but it looks like Koch may indeed get her name in the record books anyway. Garriott flew aboard the Skylab space station during the Skylab 3 mission and on the Space Shuttle Columbia for the STS-9/Spacelab-1 mission.

September 25: NASA astronaut Jessica Meir is scheduled to launch to the station with Roscosmos cosmonaut Oleg Skripochka and United Arab Emirates' Hazzaa Ali Almansoori, a Roscosmos spaceflight participant who will return with Hague and Ovchinin Oct. 3.

NASA reported that the expeditions of Morgan and Koch will help researchers collect supplementary information about the effects of long-duration human spaceflight longer than the usual six-month station mission. The family is getting more significant with the new robots that have been sent with Cygnus spacecraft to the International Space Station.

"Christina's extended mission will provide additional data for NASA's Human Research Program and continue to support future missions to the Moon and Mars", said Jennifer Fogarty, chief scientist of the Human Research Program at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, US.

"Astronauts demonstrate unbelievable resilience and adaptability in response to long duration spaceflight exposure", said Fogarty. She said it feels awesome having so much extra time in space and "a true honour and a dream come true". 'Astrobee, NASA's new free-flying robotic system, will help astronauts reduce time they spend on routine duties, leaving them to focus more on the things that only humans can do, ' NASA explains. She's a native of MI, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering and physics and a Master of Science degree in electrical engineering.
