BlackBerry's move follows the announcement earlier Thursday from Indonesian technology company Emtek that it was shutting down the consumer version of BBM, previously known as BlackBerry Messenger, on May 31.

The messaging app BBM will officially be turned off on 31st May 2019.

"We poured our hearts into making this a reality, and we are proud of what we have built to date", it continued.

As per the release notes published on BBM's blog, the company has stated that its employees "poured their hearts" into BlackBerry Messenger's revival; however, they state that its users have moved on to other platforms and have stated that it has been hard to acquire new users despite their best efforts. "We are grateful for your support and wish to thank everyone, especially our users, partners, and employees, for being part of the BBM consumer service journey", the blogpost states.

If you're still using BBM, you'll need to download any your photos, videos and other files you've shared before the service shuts down for good.

Virginia unemployment rate unchanged at 2.9 percent
Public sector employment was lower by 800 jobs for the month, with all of the contraction occurring at the local government level. February's seasonally adjusted job loss was reduced through revisions by 1,000 jobs to 7,800 jobs lost.

After Apple's iPhones and Android smartphones became more popular, both BlackBerry and BBM lost major user base. Almost every social media app, from Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp and Telegram supported IM features. In order to have it active on more than one device at any given time, however, you have to authorize each device.

"While we respect Emtek's decision, we're disappointed the platform did not thrive and grow as expected", Mark Wilson, BlackBerry's chief marketing officer, said in a statement.

Emtek, which acquired the licensing rights of BBM, claimed the instant messaging application had over 60 million monthly users in Indonesia.

It's unclear if BBM users will be able to port their accounts or data over to the enterprise version.
