Duterte calls for prayers for peace, solidarity, understanding on Ramadan

"Together, in the spirit of Ramadan, we can achieve a more harmonious and respectful society", Trump said in his message on the start of the holy month.

The Ramadan fast begins with a pre-dawn meal called "suhoor" to prepare hungry stomachs for the long day ahead.

National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) Secretary Saidamen Pangarungan said the Philippine grand mufti (Islamic jurist) and counterparts around the globe have not sighted the Ramadan moon in simultaneous monitoring on Sunday.

There are exceptions to fasting for children, the elderly, the sick, women who are pregnant, nursing or menstruating and people travelling. Unlike the Gregorian calendar where days of a month are fixed, the Hijri calendar depends on the sighting of the moon.

Across the world, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk each day for the entire month of Ramadan, abstaining from food and drink and engaging in intense nightly worship, in addition to five daily prayers.

Muslims around the world celebrated Eid al Fitr which marks the end of the month of Ramadan, after the sighting of the new crescent moon.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad, according to Islamic belief.

In a statement made available to Nyasa Times by presidential press secretary Mgeme Kalilani, President Mutharika and the First Lady are wishing all Muslims in Malawi and the world at large "peace, joy and blessings" as they observe Ramadhan.

Fasting is also seen as a way to learn patience and break bad habits.

This year, Ramadan ends on June 4, 2019.

Ramdan is a period of deep spiritual reflection, prayer, and renewal of faith for the Muslim community.

Saraki said: "It is my prayer that Allah accepts the earnest prayers and sacrifices of the Muslim Ummah during this Holy Month".

Ramadan is full of celebration and festivity as the Muslims immerse themselves in reading the Quran, making prayers, and spending maximum time doing dhikr (praising remembrance) for the Almighty Creator.
