German crossbow deaths police find more bodies

Three people were found dead with crossbow injuries in the hotel.

German police are hoping that an autopsy will shed light on a tragedy in a Bavarian hotel where three guests were found dead with arrows in them and two crossbows lying beside their bodies, local broadcaster B24 reports.

Two women, believed to be aged around 30, were discovered in an apartment in Wittingen, northern Germany.

News agency DPA reported on Sunday that employees of a hotel in the town of Passau found the bodies and two crossbows in the room.

The man and the older woman were lying together in bed, while the younger woman was lying on the floor. The man and the older woman were from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate in south-western Germany, while the younger woman was last registered as living in Wittingen in Lower Saxony, in the north of the country. One of the victims in the Passau deaths, a 30-year-old woman, lived in Wittingen, according to prosecutors. Police said a third, unused crossbow was found inside a bag on Monday.

The hotel is on the banks of the Ilz river, on the edge of the Bavarian city of Passau near the Austrian border. Police did not release further details on the identities of the three.

A police statement said: 'At present, the reasons for the death of the three people are still completely open.

Some German media reported that the trio had booked to stay for three nights, without breakfast, and had already been there for two days when they were discovered.

The man, who was dressed in a suit had a long, white beard, while the two women were dressed in black, witnesses told German daily Bild.

Though it is hard to buy firearms in Germany, anyone who is over the age of eighteen can legally buy a crossbow.
