Putin noted that Iran was and is "the most monitored and transparent" country in the world after signing the deal in 2015 and said that he had spoken to the chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), who told him that Tehran is complying with its obligations.

"The talks were open and useful". Unlike many other news organizations, we have not put up a paywall. A Kremlin spokesperson rejected the notion that Putin's schedule was an intentional "message" for the USA administration.

Pompeo's visit followed the publication of the long-awaited report by Mueller into the nature of Russia's role in that election that spoke of "sweeping and systematic" interference by Moscow but did not establish that members of Trump's campaign conspired with Russian Federation during the 2016 election.

While Pompeo said Tuesday that the USA and Russian Federation "have been working very closely together on [sanctions] in a very productive fashion", Pyongyang and Moscow have in recent months signaled a desire to avoid the full repatriation of North Korean workers from Russian Federation by late December, as required under current sanctions.

During the meeting, Lavrov and Pompeo agreed to continue anti-terror efforts.

The warning came as Saudi Arabia said that two of its oil tankers were sabotaged off the coast of the United Arab Emirates in attacks Sunday that caused "significant damage" to the vessels, one of them as it was heading to pick up Saudi oil to take to the US.

"My impression is that the president is set to restore Russian-American relations, contacts, to jointly resolve issues that are of mutual interest to us", Putin told Pompeo in front of reporters before a private meeting on Tuesday.

During their remarks, Lavrov appeared to suggest that the two leaders could not reach agreement on the issue of Iran and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action with regard to the regime's mounting nuclear ambitions.

For his part, Lavrov said Moscow would work "to ensure this situation does not descend into a military scenario".

"Democracy cannot be done by force".

But Lavrov flatly rejected the request, denouncing U.S. and opposition "threats" against the Maduro government.

The U.S. has been critical of Russian Federation for propping up Maduro's regime. "It's about trying to find solutions, compromises, places where there are overlapping interests".

Another proposal was to create a bilateral business council, uniting the representatives of the commerce communities of the two countries. "And I think that our talks here today were a good step in that direction".

The offensive threatens to unleash a major humanitarian catastrophe with 180,000 civilians already being forced to flee their homes in the last two weeks.

Pompeo warned Russian Federation not to meddle in the United States presidential election next year, calling on Moscow "to demonstrate that these types of activities are a thing of the past".

And he did say that the US does not want to have war.

"We want and we are ready to deal with cybersecurity issues along with our American partners, without any politicisation", he said.

But he failed to bend attitudes among leaders who fear the USA and Iran are inching towards war.
