There is a growing list of issues dividing the two countries - Russia's interference in the 2016 elections, Syria, Venezuela and, with tensions now growing in the Persian Gulf, Iran.

Of course special counsel Robert Mueller did find that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 election in support of President Trump.

Saying that "such insinuations are absolutely fake", Lavrov added that with the release of special counsel Robert Mueller's report, "we hope that this tumultuous situation will die down".

Kremlin reduced chances of US-Russia reaching agreements on the Iranian matter and said continued escalation in the region is likely.

He also noted that "there was no personal message from Putin to Trump".

Pompeo's very constructive news conference with Lavrov included the Russian Foreign Minister intercepting a question about Russian election interference and launching into a six-minute harangue about how America has been interfering in Russian politics using the Internet.

Pompeo and Trump's national security adviser John Bolton have repeatedly accused Russia, along with Cuba, of propping up Maduro and demanded that Russian and other foreign troops, intelligence officers and security forces leave the country.

While Pompeo said Tuesday that the US and Russian Federation "have been working very closely together on [sanctions] in a very productive fashion", Pyongyang and Moscow have in recent months signaled a desire to avoid the full repatriation of North Korean workers from Russian Federation by late December, as required under current sanctions. "We want the Venezuelan people to get their democracy back".

Pompeo said that he spoke both to Lavrov and, on Monday in Brussels, to European allies about the threat the United States sees from Iran.

The U.S. and North Korea addressed the point explicitly in the Singapore Agreement signed last June, but have yet to carry out additional steps on the issue beyond Washington's cancellation of some joint military exercises with South Korea.

Last week, the United States sent an aircraft carrier and B-52 bombers to the Middle East in response to intelligence that Iran was planning attacks on American interests.

"We fundamentally don't seek war with Iran", Pompeo said.

As for reports that more US troops could be moved to the Middle East, Pompeo said he would defer to the Defense Department.
