The New York Police Department's Special Operations Unit also confirmed the incident on Twitter, noting that the aircraft had just taken off from a heliport on West 30th Street when it crashed into the water.

Photos from the scene showed the helicopter marked with a logo for Blade, a company dubbed the "Uber for helicopters". Fortunately, the pilot - 34-year-old Eric Morales - was alone in the helicopter when it descended into the water, and he only sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to the CBS News.

"He was just kind of spinning and then the helicopter got sideways on him and then that's when it started going down", Byrd said.

"It was just instinct".

A ferry was carrying commuters from West 39th Street in Manhattan to 14th Street in Hoboken when Capt. Adam Sciaino saw the helicopter go down, according to NY Waterway. "We're right here. Edwin Montoya is an outstanding deckhand".
