At 2.17pm local time, Claire Murphy tweeted: "Some kind of security incident at the Eiffel Tower".

The Eiffel Tower, the iconic signature of the Parisian skyline, was evacuated Monday afternoon after a climber scaled its heights.

Last week, France celebrated the 130th anniversary of the Eiffel Tower's public opening in 1889 - marking the milestone with a laser light show that retraced the monument's history.

"The Eiffel Tower is now closed until further notice", the Eiffel Tower Twitter account said. "We kindly advise our visitors to postpone their visit".

Images posted on social media show him close to the observation deck at the top of the tower. We kindly advise our visitors to postpone their visit.

It was Woods performance in the Players Championship that really caught the eye, with rounds of 65 and 69 during the weekend. With the leaders in the US Open normally hovering around par, this produces a great opportunity for Woods to capitalize.

The surrounding streets were locked down.

The man reportedly began his ascent at the second level, at some 149 meters above ground level.

A Paris police spokeswoman said a team of firefighters including a climbing specialist is on the scene and in touch with the intruder, whose motivations remain unclear.

In October 2017, the tower also was evacuated after a man ventured out onto one of the beams and threatened to commit suicide.
