Google suspends Huawei access to android updates after Trump's ban

No access to the Play Store means no access to Google apps, services, and all other mobile apps.

"We assure you while we are complying with all USA gov't requirements, services like Google Play & security from Google Play Protect will keep functioning on your existing Huawei device", said Google on Twitter.

"We will continue to build a safe and sustainable software ecosystem, in order to provide the best experience for all users globally", he added.

Huawei is currently the second largest smartphone maker worldwide behind Samsung, and the Chinese company is now selling more phones than Apple. Huawei could theoretically update its code from the AOSP core, but there's no guarantee that existing devices would retain compatibility with the Play Store going forward, as those proprietary libraries wouldn't be available.

On May 17, the commerce department said it was considering toning down restrictions on Huawei to "prevent the interruption of existing network operations and equipment". It was not immediately clear on Sunday whether Huawei's access to mobile software would be affected. The ban could also hinder Huawei's ability to produce its latest equipment, since the company relies on USA suppliers for components including wireless chips, antennas and handset operating software.

The result of this forced move is not good for Huawei or users of its handsets outside of China.

A climber scaled the heights of the Eiffel Tower
The Eiffel Tower, the iconic signature of the Parisian skyline, was evacuated Monday afternoon after a climber scaled its heights. In October 2017, the tower also was evacuated after a man ventured out onto one of the beams and threatened to commit suicide.

The services and applications which will be limited by the implementation of this suspension are still being discussed within Google, the report said. Huawei attorneys are also studying the impact of the blacklist, a Huawei spokesman said on Friday.

This ban does not mean that Huawei has lost its access to Android because the system is open-source and available to everyone. The only company that has sort of made Google-less Android work is Amazon, which sells forked Android tablets that are so cheap and disposable they come in a six-pack. Google will not be allowed to aid Huawei in development of its phones, and those phones will not be allowed to carry official Google apps like Gmail, the Play Store and more.

Huawei is one of a number of phone manufacturers who use the Google-developed Android operating systems on its phones and tablets.

"The conflicts between USA and Chinese producers will have no impact on Russian users as everything works out well", Volin said.

However, roughly half of the Chinese firm's business is in Europe, a market where buyers expect Google apps and services.

However, according to the Chinese company, the damage isn't one-sided. Google broadly confirmed the reports in a statement referring directly to the executive order and Huawei hasn't commented, though Mashable did reach out for comment.
