To rule, a party needs the support of 272 lawmakers.

Pre-election media polls indicate that no party is likely to win anything close to a majority in Parliament, which has 543 seats. One poll by Neta Newsx, though, forecast Modi's group falling 30 seats short.

ABP-Nielsen poll projected 267 for the NDA, 127 for the UPA and 148 for "Others".

Prodeep Chakrabarty, a retired teacher in Kolkata, said Modi's BJP was desperate to win some seats against Banerjee's influential regional party. The Times Now-VMR poll predicted the BJP-led alliance would win 306 seats.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by PM Narendra Modi will form the government for the second time in a row after results for General Election are announced on May 23, according to bets placed in the satta market. Congress was reduced to 44 seats, its worst showing in decades. The equity markets also rejoiced the predictions of exit polls as the Sensex surged over 1,100 points and the Nifty 50 Index reclaimed 11,700 mark.

Although Modi's party is poised to lose seats in northern Uttar Pradesh, which elects the most lawmakers out of all Indian states, the party's return to power will be on the back of a strong showing in other northern heartland regions and two eastern provinces, CVoter's polling showed.

Also on Twitter, Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi lashed out at the election commission, suggesting that they had been compromised.

The seven rounds of voting over six weeks ended on Sunday with about 65 per cent of the 900 eligible voters taking part, the election commission said. "We have moved away from issues to individuals".

Modi faced criticism early on in the campaign for failing to create jobs and for weak farm prices, and analysts as well as politicians said the election race was tightening with the main opposition Congress party gaining ground.
