Game of Thrones finale draws over 1.07m viewers

The previous record was held for nearly 20 years by The Sopranos season 4 premiere on September 15, 2002, which saw 13.4 million people watching that episode at the same time.

While the series finale drew mixed reviews from critics, its commercial dominance was not in dispute. The show also stands as the most Emmy Award-winning primetime scripted series ever, with a record 47 awards.

The VPM rating for the show has once again smashed overnight streaming records, beating the original record set by season eight's first episode.

Breaking that down, 1.076 million watched across all airings on the set top box, marking an increase of 21 per cent on the season 7 finale, while 471,000 tuned in to stream live or on demand on both Foxtel GO and Foxtel Now.

The programme's departure will also be felt keenly in Northern Ireland, where much of the show has been filmed, with the final series reportedly costing an average of $15m an episode.

Ric Flair Reportedly Pulled From Starrcast Roast
