Meanwhile, two Navy guided-missile destroyers, the USS McFaul and USS Gonzalez, have traveled through the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday afternoon without challenge from Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps, Pentagon defense officials said.

"The Iranians moving weapons around is not a new thing and that they may be doing it at a more rapid pace after we have threatened them with a carrier strike group is not surprising", said Rep. Jim Himes, D-Conn., a senior member of the House Intelligence Committee.

Tensions mounted between Tehran and Washington last May, when Trump pulled his country out of the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and re-imposed harsh sanctions against the Islamic Republic in defiance of global criticism. Many lawmakers referenced the role of false intelligence in the lead-up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq when questioning current intelligence on Iran.

"Simply stated, the current state of heightened tensions between the USA and Iran is exclusively due to the policies of the Trump administration, which abandoned a nonproliferation agreement that was working in favor of a so-called 'maximum pressure campaign'".

Tensions have risen in recent days, with concerns about a potential U.S. -Iran conflict. The White House has not officially responded to Trump's tweets.

"President Trump's saber-rattling about Iran has reached a risky new low with his threat to "end" Iran-a country of 83 million men, women, and children", Abdi said. When asked why Democratic primary voters should back him over his mentor, Moulton said: "I think it's time for the generation that fought in Iraq and Afghanistan to take over for the generation that sent us there".
