NOAA forecasts near-normal 2019 Atlantic hurricane season

The prediction center expects a near-normal Atlantic hurricane season but reports there is still a 30% chance of an above-normal season and a 30% chance of a below-normal season.

For the entire Atlantic hurricane season, NOAA forecasts there will be a total of nine to 15 named storms (39 mph or higher winds), of which four to eight could become hurricanes (74 mph or higher winds), including two to four major hurricanes (111 mph or higher winds).

Meanwhile, Hawaii and the Central Pacific could experience more storms than normal during this year's hurricane season.

"Throughout hurricane season, dedicated NOAA staff will remain on alert for any danger to American lives and communities".

Two of the worst storms, Michael and Florence, had their names retired.

NOAA is projecting there to be a near normal Atlantic season.

"This outlook reflects the forecast for El Nino to likely continue through the hurricane season". Of those storms, there will be 2 to 4 major hurricanes, which are classified as Category 3, 4, and 5 with winds of 111 miles per hour or higher. However, warmer-than-average sea temperatures could bring stronger activity.

The hurricane season in Hawaiʻi runs from June 1 through November 30.

A year ago had 15 named storms, eight hurricanes and two major ones, Florence and Michael.

"Preparing ahead of a disaster is the responsibility of all levels of government, the private sector, and the public", said Daniel Kaniewski with FEMA.

It noted that this season is expected to be slightly above the yearly average of 12 named storms, six hurricanes, and three major hurricanes.

How bad was the hurricane season in 2018? The 2019 outlook indicates a 20% chance of having a normal season and just a 10% chance of a below-normal season.
