Insisting that the U.S. does not want to be drawn into a conflict with the Islamic Republic, Mr Shanahan has said that the United States "posture is for deterrence".

Republicans insisted that the administration was not hurtling toward a war with Iran, calling recent military moves "measured".

Some House Democrats accused the administration officials of twisting intelligence to make the case for what they see as an aggressive response to any Iranian actions.

"We have put on hold the potential for attacks on Americans" by Iran or its proxies, he told reporters at the Pentagon.

He added that Iran "has been waging a kind of low-level war against the USA for 40 years", reminding host Harris Faulkner of the Reagan administration's decision to "re-flag" oil tankers in the Persian Gulf to deter action by Iran in the late 1980s. I think for him, the real measure, in his mind, is showing he improved over what [President Barack] Obama did.

Numerous Republicans have been clamoring for a tough stance on Iran that includes military options.
