The 5G news keeps on rolling this morning - Vodafone has now been in touch to say it is bizarrely cancelling a 5G launch event scheduled for tomorrow (Thursday) in London "due to the ongoing media agenda".

5G technology is the next generation of mobile network and is expected to offer internet speeds several times that of the existing generation 4G.

Losing Arm as a supplier would be a major blow because it would "cripple key Huawei chips", said Dave Burstein, a telecom analyst at STL Partners and publisher of Huawei Report.

While the Osaka-based company does not have a major production site for components in the United States, it said the ban applies to goods having 25 percent or more of US -originated technologies or materials.

The country's biggest carrier, NTT Docomo, also announced it was suspending pre-orders for a new Huawei handset, but stopped short of halting the release itself.

The moves follows a decision by US President Donald Trump to effectively ban US companies from supplying Huawei and affiliates with critical components, citing security concerns.

USA officials this week, however, issued a 90-day reprieve on the ban on dealing with Huawei, saying breathing space is needed to avoid huge disruption.

"We still don't know when we will be able to start selling", he said, adding the Japanese carrier is concerned about "everything" linked to the USA ban.

"How the U.S. ban on business with Huawei will impact the Chinese firm's performance is at this point unclear, but what is clear to me is that its sales will be negatively affected", said Hiroyuki Kubota, an independent financial analyst.

In the midst of a trade war with Beijing, President Donald Trump has barred U.S. companies from engaging in telecommunications trade with foreign companies said to threaten American national security.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned Britain during a visit to London that it risked undermining the historic allies' intelligence sharing.

Huawei has come under mounting pressure over the past week in its smartphone business, which up until now has been largely unaffected by difficulties in its telecoms network arm.

ALPHABET INC: Google on May 19 suspended the transfer of hardware, software and technical services to Huawei, except what it has made publicly available via open source licensing.
