19 students killed in fire at commercial complex in Surat

A video clip aired by news channels showed students jumping off from third and fourth floor windows amid plumes of thick smoke rising from the building.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed anguish over the incident and asked the state government to provide assistance to the victims and their families.

Rupani, who visited the hospital, told reporters: "I'm told that due to fire in the staircase, several people jumped from the 4th floor of the building to escape".

A devastating fire engulfed a coaching centre in a Surat building in Gujarat on Friday, killing 17 students.

"The students lost their life both because of the fire and jumping out of the building", Deepak Sapthaley, a local fire official, told AFP.

Police officer Praveen Chaudhary said more than a dozen students were hospitalized with burns.

Visiting the site of the tragedy, Mr Rupani said the audit would find out if educational establishments in the state have proper equipment and facilities to deal with fire incidents. According to reports, more than eight people were also injured in the blaze. "Have ordered inquiry", he said. "Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families; wishing an early recovery to those injured". "I urge our karyakartas of BJP Surat unit to assist the people in need" Mr. Shah said in a statement. "Have asked the Gujarat Government and local authorities to provide all possible assistance to those affected", he tweeted. Authorities were investigating the cause of the fire. Civilians were helping in the rescue operation to save students and occupants of the four-storey building, witnesses said.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi wrote on Twitter, "I'm deeply hurt by the news of fire in Surat".

Gujarat's CM has declared financial help of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of children who died in this incident and has ordered an investigation into the incident.
