British PM Theresa May clings to power after Brexit gambit backfires

In a barbed farewell tweet to outgoing adversary, opposition and Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn called for an "immediate general election" to be called by whomever assumes premiership after Theresa May. Mr Corbyn said: "She has now accepted what the country has known for months: she cannot govern, and nor can her divided and disintegrating party".

"The new Conservative leader will be faced with the same political reality, that parliament can not deal with Brexit and the final say must be given to the people in a people's vote".

"Parliamentary procedure offers no route, and the only apparent way to blocking "no deal" - a vote of no confidence - would be a massive gamble for (Conservative members of parliament)", wrote the non-aligned Institute of Government.

LOCAL MP Alistair Carmichael says it was "inevitable" that Theresa May would resign as prime minister.

When May goes, her Conservative Party will elect a leader who is likely to want to renegotiate the deal she agreed with the European Union in November, raising the chances of a confrontation with the bloc and a national election.

She will stay on as Prime Minister until a replacement is appointed, which is expected to be by the end of July.

Mrs May has urged Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn to compromise and back her Brexit deal after the proposals received a hostile response from critics on her own side.

"Her departure will not solve the Brexit mess that the Tories have created", Ms Sturgeon said.

Captains pick favourites for World Cup trophy
That is the kind of pressure the World Cup brings", he said. 'Cricket is a game that anyone on their day can beat anybody. I don't think there's anybody that's head and shoulders above everybody else.

"The best and only option remains to take Brexit back to the people".

Adding: "The prospect of an even more hardline Brexiteer now becoming PM and threatening a no deal exit is deeply concerning". Given current circumstances, it also feels deeply wrong for another Tory to be installed in Number 10 without a general election.

Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard said: "We don't just need Theresa May out, we need the Tory government evicted from Downing Street".

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte tweeted "thanks and respect" to Mrs May, adding that the "agreement reached between the European Union and the United Kingdom for an ordered Brexit remains on the table".

May will step down as Prime Minster on June 7th but will remain Prime Minister during the leadership contest.

Senior figures in both the SNP and the Tories believe that a hard Brexit is likely to increase support for Scottish independence, especially if it brings a prolonged period of economic turmoil.

"That makes it all the more essential that Scotland has a choice of becoming an independent country". Every member of parliament (MP) holds their own red lines to the extent a deal which will appease sufficient MPs and European Union leaders simply does not exist.

"I leave with no ill-will but with enormous gratitude to have the opportunity to serve the country I love".
