He arrived late Monday night, then underwent exploratory surgery at Mass. "He is stable, awake, and resting comfortably this morning in the ICU where he is expected to remain for the next several days".

The former Boston Red Sox slugger underwent a second operation at Boston's Massachusetts General Hospital overnight after being flown from the Dominican Republic on Monday.

Tiffany Ortiz also thanked fans for "the outpouring of support and love that we have received during this incredibly hard time".

In the U.S., fans prayed for his recovery and wished him well, with New England Patriots star Julian Edelman assuring him on Instagram: "Papi, all of New England has your back".

Meanwhile, Lopez, a close friend of Ortiz's who acts as both a spokesperson and personal media assistant, told Rivera that the 43-year-old "even flashed that smile" while in hospital.

Lopez said Ortiz underwent six hours of surgery.

The Red Sox retired Ortiz's No. 34 in 2017, and Boston renamed a bridge and a stretch of road outside Fenway Park in his honor.

Reports have since surfaced that Big Papi was shot as a result of dealing with the wife of a drug lord, which might explain why the shooter came into the bar and only targeted him.

López was shot in the leg, and his injuries were not life-threatening, said his wife, Liza Blanco, who is also a TV host. A second suspect remains at large. He was named an All-Star 10 times and helped the Red Sox win World Series championships in 2004, 2007 and 2013. He was released into police custody and has yet to be charged in connection with the shooting.

The Red Sox arranged for an air ambulance to transport Ortiz from the Dominican Republic to Boston.

"I'm so disappointed to know that someone like David, who has saved so many lives, can have someone after his life", Martinez said, before being overcome with emotion.
