Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz is reportedly expected to make a "total recovery" after suffering a gunshot wound while at a club in the Dominican Republic. Ortiz was sitting at an outdoor table at a bar in his hometown of Santo Domingo when two men drove up on a motorcycle.

Ortiz was at the Dial Bar and Lounge in Santo Domingo when a gunman approached from behind and shot him at close range in the torso, authorities said. He is Eddy Feliz Garcia and he was previously arrest for drug possession in 2017.

Lopez said Ortiz underwent six hours of surgery.

"In 2013, when we needed David Ortiz the most, he was there for us", Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy said Monday. He is now in stable condition, and is awaiting approval from doctors to be transported to the United States. Duran declined to elaborate on what the suspect told the police, or if he was the man seen in the video pulling the trigger.

Ortiz's wife, Tiffany, released a statement Tuesday morning providing an update on her husband while also thanking the Red Sox and the community for their support through this obviously hard time. Investigators said they were trying to determine whether Ortiz was the intended target.

Garcia apparently tried to flee the nightclub after the shooting, but onlookers immediately stopped and attacked him before he was turned over to police and taken to a hospital for treatment.

He led the Red Sox to three World Series championships, was a 10-time All-Star and hit 541 home runs.

ESPN's Enrique Rojas tweeted Monday afternoon that Dr. Abel Gonzalez, who performed the surgery in the Dominican Republic, had said Ortiz was in stable enough condition to travel.

"We can not live in that anxiety that every time you go out of your house, a [thug] comes and takes away what you have on you, " the slugger said.

Eliezer Salvador, who was at the scene, said the gunman said nothing, just fired once.

He had helped rally the city after the Boston Marathon bombings that year, giving a speech at Fenway Park, telling the crowd to stay "Boston strong".
