Sarah Huckabee Sanders leaving role as Trump’s press secretary

Trump hinted at future plans for Sanders, saying he hopes she runs for governor of Arkansas.

But White House press conferences have become increasingly rare during her tenure.

But she told special counsel Robert Mueller, during his investigation into whether the Trump election campaign had colluded with Russian Federation, that this claim was "a slip of the tongue" that was "not founded on anything".

He praised her job as press sec and even suggested she run for governor of Arkansas. She has not held a "daily" press briefing in 94 days. "I got bit by the bug early".

Vice President Mike Pence tweeted: "Thank you to @PressSec Sarah Sanders for her service to our Administration & our nation!" She's also among the longest tenured of an inner circle that has experienced record turnover among senior staff.

Several other press and communications officials have recently left the White House, where the president's mercurial nature has often made it hard to speak with authority on his behalf.

Trump acknowledged that tension in a May 2017 tweet: "As a very active President with lots of things happening, it is not possible for my surrogates to stand at podium with ideal accuracy!" While she frequently sidestepped substantive policy questions, she regularly came to briefings with prepared remarks lambasting reporters and their coverage of the president.

Sources close to the White House have said that Sanders' has privately discussed running for the office herself, according to CNN.

The President hasn't announced who would be her replacement.

"I always say that when most kids are seven or eight years old out jumping rope, she was sitting at the kitchen table listening to [political commentators] analyze poll results", her father told Fox News in May of 2017. She later corrected the error in a tweet.

"She would be fantastic", he said.

Sanders was the second press secretary under the Trump administration after replacing Sean Spicer.

Sanders is married to pollster and strategist Bryan Chatfield Sanders, with whom she shares three children.
