1 dead, 3 injured in California Costco shooting

One man was killed and three other people injured, including an off-duty LAPD officer, in a shooting Friday night inside a crowded Costco store in Corona, police said.

The suspected shooter was detained and also taken to a hospital after claiming he was injured, police told reporters at the scene, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Police swarmed the store and several ambulances were parked outside the store about 50 miles (80.5 kilometers) from downtown Los Angeles.

Those injured, which includes an off-duty officer from another agency, were transported to local hospitals in unknown conditions.

The man involved in the argument was killed and two other people were wounded, Lt. Jeff Edwards said.

A few hid with employees in a refrigerated food locker as the chaos erupted outside.

A man witnesses described to KCAL as having a mohawk haircut was seen arguing with another Costco customer near the freezer section, where he pulled out a gun and opened fire.

Aurtis Wilson, a retired U.S. Marine, told the Press Enterprise that he heard the argument and "next thing I know I hear seven shots".

Another shopper, Will Lungo, was with his wife inside Costco when he heard what he first thought was someone dropping a bottle of wine. "An employee came in and helped us out through the emergency exit".

Other witnesses told KCAL-TV that people rushed to the exits.

Police Department tweeted that the shooting incident "has been stabilized", and "there is no apparent threat to our community from any outstanding persons". The station reported more than 100 people were outside the store. "If you left an item such as a purse, cell phone or backpack with identifying information, it was secured by the Corona Police Department".
