Patriots second-year running back Sony Michel missed mandatory minicamp and at least one offseason workout due to undergoing a knee scope. Jeff Howe of The Athletic reported the news on Wednesday. Howe reports that Michel is expected to be ready for training camp. Michel is still the heavy favorite to assume the majority of snaps in his second season as starter - especially after he averaged 4.5 yards per carry and rushed for almost 1,000 yards as a rookie - but it will be interesting nonetheless to monitor how the knee procedure affects his performance moving forward.

The 24-year-old, who tore his ACL in high school, suffered a knee injury in last year's training camp that held him out of the entire preseason. In the playoffs, he became even more important to the offense with 71 carries for 336 yards and six touchdowns in three games, including Super Bowl LIII when he scored the game's only touchdown.

The No. 31 overall draft pick in 2018, Michel has had a variety of knee issues. Harris was extremely productive during his four years in Tuscaloosa, twice rushing for over 1,000 yards and compiling more than 800 yards in his senior season. Fortunately, the Patriots are still deep at running back with James White and Rex Burkhead on the roster and core special teamer Brandon Bolden returning after one season with the Dolphins.

During a guest analyst stint at ESPN last week, former Pats running back Shane Vereen explained the importance of finding weaknesses against a zone defense. That trend could continue into the summer and fall if Michel remains limited.

Turns out Sony Michel's absence from Patriots mini-camp was more than just maintenance.
