Iran to scale back nuclear deal commitments - Tasnim

Regional tensions escalated over attacks Thursday on two tankers near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, which the U.S. blamed on Iran.

Rouhani's remarks came one day after Iran Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi denied responsibility for a pair of Thursday attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman.

Mr Rouhani did not refer to last week's tanker incident in his speech to the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia, being held in the Tajikistan capital, Dushanbe.

The threat of a trade war has loomed over the US-China relationship since the countries started imposing escalating tariffs on imports from each other in 2018 while trying to negotiate a trade deal.

"Iran needed to see positive signals from other signatories to the pact, " he added.

Iran will on Monday announce new measures to reduce Tehran's commitments under the landmark 2015 nuclear deal signed with world powers, according to a its semi-official news agency Tasnim.

Iran's deputy foreign minister met a top European Union diplomat on Saturday to discuss the future of the troubled nuclear deal, state media said, amid rising tensions between Tehran and Washington.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow would adhere to the agreement and urged other signatories to follow suit.

The nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was negotiated by six world powers and offered Iran reprieve from global and unilateral sanctions in exchange for voluntarily restricting its nuclear program.

On May 8, exactly one year after U.S. President Donald Trump quit the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Iran adopted a countermeasure announcing its decision to abandon limits on its uranium enrichment stockpile unless Europe makes a decision within 60 days to shield it from the U.S. sanctions.

"The suspicious actions against the tankers... seem to complement the economic sanctions against Iran considering that (the US) has not achieved any results from them", Ali Larijani tells lawmakers. Insurance costs in the Persian Gulf are soaring.
