Michel Platini Arrested Over Awarding Of 2022 World Cup

According to Mediapart, Platini was taken into custody on Tuesday morning as part of the investigation into the awarding of the World Cup to Qatar.

Qatar was named as the hosts of the World Cup in December 2010 but there have been a number of controversies regarding their suitability.

"If a new host is required, England are likely to be one of the favourites as they are one of the few countries who could hold the tournament at short notice with their infrastructure and transport".

Prosecutors are investigating suspected corruption and bribery in the process of awarding the 2022 World Cup to Gulf emirate of Qatar.

The Associated Press reported that a justice official with knowledge of case also said Platini had been arrested.

French legend Platini was elected in 2007 and served as president until 2015 when he was banned by the FIFA Ethics Committee.

Much intrigue has centered on Platini's decision to vote for Qatar.

There were also allegations that Qatar had bribed Federation Internationale de Football Association executives.

Platini was banned by Federation Internationale de Football Association in 2015 along with former president Sepp Blatter for eight years following a verdict from the governing body's ethics committee. American attorney Michael Garcia found that some of Qatar's conduct "may not have met the standards" required by Federation Internationale de Football Association but concluded there was no "evidence of any improper activity by the bid team".
