South Bend, Indiana (CNN)Presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg faced the raw and unvarnished emotion of his community at a town hall in South Bend, Indiana, on Sunday as the mayor attempted to soothe the pain caused by the recent killing of a black man by a police officer.

The 37-year-old mayor of the small city in IN spoke at a sometimes contentious town hall meeting that was called a week after a white officer, Sgt Ryan O'Neill, fatally shot Eric Logan, a 54-year-old black man.

The heckler called Buttigieg a "traitor" during the live broadcast event, which was held exactly a week after a 54-year-old black man was shot and killed by a police officer in South Bend.

Buttigieg has touted his leadership of South Bend on the presidential campaign trail.

In the question-and-answer section, one attendee told Buttigieg to reorganize his department by Friday of next week to "get the racists off the streets", in reference to law enforcement officers.

Rev. Michael Patton, who is the president of the South Bend chapter of the NAACP, moderated the discussion with Buttigieg and South Bend Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, a clearly emotional Buttigieg said anger and frustration over race relations in the city had been "hurled" at him.

Others in the audience continuously interrupted Buttigieg as he spoke on stage, shouting rude comments and profanities the mayor's way.

Police have not said what may have led to the shooting.

Buttigieg had surged from obscurity to become a top-tier candidate in a crowded Democratic presidential field.

Asked after the town hall meeting about the latest shootings, Buttigieg described them as a "reversal" after progress in curbing violence in South Bend earlier this year and in 2018.

"We have to bridge this gap between the police and the community", one protestor said amid shouts from the audience members. "This is the beginning of the conversation, not the end", Buttigieg said. Prosecutors investigating the death of Logan say the shooting was not recorded on the body camera worn by Sgt O'Neill.

The white mayor has had a sometimes-tense relationship with the black community dating back to his first term in office, when he fired the city's first black police chief.
