Microsoft founder Bill Gates has lamented the company's failure to successfully challenge Android. Gates doesn't believe there is room for another truly competitive "non-Apple [smartphone] operating system" right now and says if Microsoft had won the war then they would have an additional $400 billion in overall revenue from the last decade of sales. "At the time we were very concerned that Microsoft's mobile strategy would be successful", said Schmidt during a 2012 legal fight with Oracle about Java. A shortfall in apps - particularly key software that was available for iOS and Android, but not for Windows Phone - always hamstrung the company. By the time Android started to take off, Microsoft was playing catch-up with its Windows Phone efforts and never managed to close the gap.

Bill Gates: "Every night you think, 'Am I screwing this up?'". Even so, he does readily admit to the "greatest mistake ever" during his heyday at Microsoft, and it is a big one. Bill Gates did step down as CEO 7 years before the announcement of the iPhone and Ballmer was in charge, but it was Gates who was still manning the chief software architect role until the second half of 2008.

Gates promised to "substantially increase his dedication" to Microsoft in 2014, and the Microsoft Edge team sought his opinion on the movement of the company to Chromium past year. According to Gates, letting Apple and mainly Google own the mobile market with Android was nothing less than Gates' "greatest mistake ever", as he said during the event.

Microsoft seems to have overcome its errors in mobile phones, and the company's cloud business is thriving.

"It's fantastic to me, having made one of the greatest mistakes of all time.our other assets - Windows, Office - are still very strong".

Gates praised the current chief executive Satya Nadella for helping reshape Microsoft and bring it back to the being the world's most valuable company with a market capitalization of over $1 trillion.
