'The worst is still to come': sizzling Europe battles wildfires, health risks

Germany, France, Poland and the Czech Republic have all recorded their highest-ever June temperatures, and in Spain firefighters are battling Catalonia's worst wildfires in 20 years.

The wildfires in Catalonia are among the worst it has seen in 20 years, the regional government said, adding that around 30 people had been evacuated from farmhouses in the affected area.

Wildfires raged across Catalonia and French authorities stepped up restrictions on water use and driving in cities as swaths of western Europe remained in the grip of an intense heat wave on Thursday.

Temperatures have reached 43 degrees Celcius in parts of Europe over the last few days and France may reach its highest-ever recorded temperature on Friday, with temperatures expected to exceed 45 C.
